Riyadh Metro Among Four Finalists for Mobility Award at Smart City Expo 2026
Riyadh Metro, overseen by the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC), has been named one of four finalists for the Mobility Award at the 2026 World Smart City Awards in Barcelona, Spain. The announcement came during Smart City Expo World Congress, with the awards attracting 533 entries from 68 countries. The selection marks international recognition of Riyadh’s efforts to develop a modern, sustainable public transport system.
One of the world’s largest automated metro networks, Riyadh Metro combines extensive infrastructure with advanced technology. As the backbone of the capital’s public transport system, the metro is designed to reduce reliance on private vehicles, ease traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, and meet growing demand for mobility as Riyadh’s population and urban footprint continue to expand.
At the congress, RCRC is also presenting its work in data-driven urban planning and city management, including the RCRC Open Data Portal, digital twin applications, and artificial intelligence. The Commission’s presentation covers the development of Riyadh’s public transport network and traffic management systems, as well as the Green Riyadh Program and major development projects across the capital.
Held from November 3 to 5 under the theme “Urban Solutions, Real Impact,” Smart City Expo World Congress is a leading international forum on urban development and the future of cities. This year’s event brings together more than 600 speakers to examine developments in digital transformation, mobility, energy, the environment, housing, and infrastructure, along with opportunities for international cooperation on more efficient and sustainable urban development.
