RCRC: New Tunnel at King Abdulaziz–Anas bin Malik Intersection

RCRC: New Tunnel at King Abdulaziz–Anas bin Malik Intersection
7 November, 2026

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) is carrying out upgrades to King Abdulaziz Road to improve traffic flow and increase capacity along one of the capital’s key transport corridors. Work is underway on a new tunnel at the intersection with Anas bin Malik Road, designed to ease congestion and improve connections between surrounding neighborhoods.

A temporary traffic diversion came into effect at the intersection on November 6, 2026, with the main carriageways of King Abdulaziz Road closed and traffic redirected to the service roads, which provide three lanes in each direction. Alternative routes and directional signs have also been introduced to maintain traffic flow and ensure motorists’ safety during construction, under a traffic management plan coordinated with the relevant authorities.

The 4.7-kilometer King Abdulaziz Road development project forms part of the Main & Ring Road Axes Development Program and includes four bridges in addition to the new tunnel. Once complete, the project will increase the road’s daily capacity to 450,000 vehicles, improve connections between major routes, ease traffic congestion, and reduce travel times.

The Main and Ring Road Axes Development Program is designed to strengthen Riyadh’s transport network and reinforce the capital’s position as a major hub for sustainable transport and logistics in the Middle East. Covering more than 500 kilometers of roads across the city, the program will expand the network through new routes, upgrades to existing major corridors, and improved connections between them.
