RCRC Completes Main Works on Al-Thumamah Road Bridge, Opens It to Traffic Friday Morning

RCRC Completes Main Works on Al-Thumamah Road Bridge, Opens It to Traffic Friday Morning
8 October, 2026

The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) has announced the completion of the main works on Al-Thumamah Road bridge at its intersection with Prince Mohammed bin Salman Road, which will open to traffic from 6:00 a.m. on Friday, October 9, after approximately six months of construction works.

The bridge was constructed at a vital location with heavy traffic and limited work space, alongside the columns of the Riyadh Metro. Its works required precise lifting and installation operations for structural elements with a total weight exceeding 3,200 tons above Prince Mohammed bin Salman Road, while traffic continued to flow around the project site. The works were completed with a safety record free of injuries and incidents, while maintaining smooth traffic flow and minimizing the impact of the works on road users.

Construction of the new bridge began on April 1, 2026, following the removal of the previous bridge. The works included the foundations, structural works, and the installation of the bridge elements, through to asphalt paving, lighting, and final finishing works.

The bridge is approximately 400 meters long and approximately 20 meters wide, and comprises six main lanes, three in each direction, in addition to four service lanes, two in each direction.

The bridge enhances east–west traffic along Al-Thumamah Road axis and facilitates access to King Abdullah Financial District, the main road axes, and the surrounding residential and commercial areas. The service lanes also separate through traffic from local traffic and reduce traffic conflicts at the intersection, raising mobility efficiency and strengthening the connectivity of the city’s road network.

The bridge is part of Al-Thumamah Road axis development works, which extend 24 kilometers from Sheikh Jaber Al-Sabah Road in the east to King Khalid Road in the west. The axis development works include 17 bridges, 10 tunnels, and 3 intersections, with work progressing steadily at the intersection of Al-Thumamah Road with King Abdulaziz Road, as well as at a number of sites along the axis, to enhance the efficiency of the road network and improve the quality of mobility in the capital.

The development of Al-Thumamah Road axis forms part of the Main and Ring Road Axes Development Program in Riyadh, which comprises more than 22 projects across four groups and aims to develop more than 500 kilometers of the road network across the city, increasing its capacity and strengthening the connectivity of its mobility network.

More than 25,000 people are working on the program’s projects as part of engineering, technical, and field teams at multiple sites across Riyadh, carrying out road, bridge, tunnel, and intersection works as part of the development of the road network to keep pace with the city’s urban and population growth.
