Cabinet Approves Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal Reserve Under RCRC
The Council of Ministers, chaired by His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince and Prime Minister, has announced the establishment of a special nature reserve, to be named the “Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal Reserve,” under the umbrella of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC).
The establishment of the reserve forms part of ongoing efforts to protect natural resources, conserve biodiversity, and promote environmental sustainability in Riyadh. It will contribute to supporting the system of nature reserves, enhancing the quality of the environment and wildlife in the region, and sustaining the associated villages and farms that form part of the area’s identity.
The reserve covers an area of 4,310 square kilometers, extending across Dhurma, Al-Muzahimiyah, and the areas between the two governorates, within the geographical boundaries under RCRC mandate. Situated 20 to 35 kilometers from Riyadh, the reserve enjoys a distinctive landscape featuring the Tuwaiq Mountains, sand dunes, and an authentic rural setting. The area is also home to 22 valleys and 3,200 farms, underscoring its rich natural and rural diversity.
RCRC oversees the achievement of the reserve’s objectives, which focus on environmental protection, the restoration of natural ecosystems, economic prosperity, and social development. These objectives will be pursued in coordination with relevant entities through plans to protect and rehabilitate the areas surrounding the Tuwaiq Mountains. The plans will also guide urban growth in a manner that balances the interests of residents, landowners, and business operators, while preserving the area’s rural character and historical identity.
