Main & Ring Road Axes Development Program

Towards a More Efficient and Sustainable Road Network

As part of enhancing the transportation system in Riyadh and preparing it to become a leading hub for sustainable mobility and logistics services in the Middle East, His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, the Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Board of the Royal Commission for Riyadh City, launched the Riyadh Main and Ring Road Axes Development Program.

The program includes the implementation and development of more than 500 kilometers of road network across the capital, through the addition of new roads, improvement of existing main corridors, and the integration of these routes to form a cohesive and efficient network.

Program Key Components ‎

The key components of the Riyadh Main and Ring Road Axes Development Program ‎include:‎

  1. Development of the Second Southern Ring Road
  2. Development of Wadi Laban Suspension Bridge, Two Parallel Bridges, and the Intersection of the Western Ring Road with Jeddah Road
  3. Development of the Western Section of Thumama Road Axis
  4. Development of Extension of Taif Road from the Laban Neighborhood to Qiddiya
  5. Development of King Fahd Road (capacity upgrade)
  6. Development of the First Ring Road (capacity upgrade)
  7. Development of Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah Road
  8. Development of Prince Turki Bin Abdulaziz I Road Axis
  9. Development of Al-Thumamah Road Axis (middle and eastern sections)
  10. Development of Dirab Road
  11. Development of Al-Urubah Road Axis – Prince Bandar Bin Abdulaziz Road
  12. Development of Imam Abdullah Bin Saud Bin Abdulaziz Road
  13. Development of Prince Mishaal Road Axis – Taif Road
  14. Expansion of Jeddah Road
  15. Development of Najm al-Din Ayyubi Road

Program Goals

The program represents one of the key pillars for achieving the objectives of Saudi Vision 2030 under the Quality of Life theme, through the development of an integrated and sustainable urban transport system that contributes to making Riyadh a more connected, green, and globally competitive city.

Program goals include the following:

Program Phases

The program is being implemented through a number of project groups that cover different areas of the city, ensuring an even distribution of efforts and the coordinated execution of works in well-organized phases.

Group One

Implementation works for the first group were launched on August 14, 2024, comprising four major projects with a total cost of SAR 13 billion.
This group represents the foundational phase of the program, focusing on improving connectivity between the outer areas of the city and enhancing traffic flow across the western corridors.

The Second Southern Ring Road, extending 56 km, includes 32 bridges and 10 main intersections.

Wadi Laban Bridge and the Western Ring Road–Jeddah Road intersection, spanning 16 km (increasing traffic capacity to 200,000 vehicles per day).

Extension of Taif Road in Laban District up to Qiddiya, covering 6 km and including two main bridges.

The western section of Al-Thumamah Road Corridor, extending 4 km and featuring four main bridges.

Group Two

Implementation works for the second group were launched on February 2, 2025, comprising eight development projects with a total cost exceeding SAR 8 billion.
This phase is distinguished by its broader geographic scope and its focus on enhancing the efficiency of the city’s internal corridors and improving connectivity between the northern, eastern, and western parts of the capital.

The eight projects included in the second phase are:‏

Development of Prince Turki bin Abdulaziz I Road, extending 6 km, including the construction of 3 bridges and improvement of 2 intersections.

Development of Dirab Road, extending 10 km, including the construction of 11 main bridges.

Development of Al-Thumamah Road Corridor (central section), extending 9 km.

Development of Imam Abdullah bin Saud Road, extending 9 km, including 9 new bridges.

Development of Imam Muslim Road, extending 12 km, including 19 new bridges.

Development of the road network surrounding King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD).

Construction of the King Salman Road–Abi Bakr Al-Siddiq Road intersection bridge.

Engineering modifications for congested locations – Phase One.
